Svedasai Juozas Tumas-Vaizgantas Gymnasium

These are some of the school we visited last May. Svedasai is a little village in central Lithuania, about 300 children study there.

                                                           The school museum

                                                              The English classroom

                                                           The library

                                                           The canteen

We love Svedasai! We love Lithuania!

The story began when four students from I.E.S. Realejos  were chosen to participate in Comenius project. From that moment everything was excitement. We started to feel like explorers, wishing to discover new experiences, but also feeling it was a great responsibility to represent our school and our country.

But the expedition really started when we arrived in Lithuania on the evening of 1st May. Although willing to find out what would happen, we could not help feeling nervous  at the same time.

But the adventure surpassed our expectations. What we found there was a treasure: a chest full of  wonders. There were so many new things to learn, so many cultures together to be heard, seen  and tasted and such an amazing willingness to participate, to help and to share that we can do nothing else but be grateful to all the people that made this experience possible. ( teachers and students from the other countries, staff and students  from Svesdasai school, our dear Lithuanian families -who made us feel at home- and our teachers)

This was a wonderful experience and we have learnt  so much from it, but , above all, we have realized how different cultures can be, but how similar are all of us and how easy is to create bonds among countries and friendship among human beings.

This beautiful place in  the heart of Europe will always remain in the middle of our heart.

Healthy Spain!

HEALTH NEWS in IES Realejos

Our school, I.E.S. Realejos has been participating for several years in a local programme called ‘Emotional-Sexual Plan’. With this programme our students receive a lot of information an advice about emotional and sexual relations. It  was born 13 years ago, but last April  the local authorities presented a renewed project under the name ¿Y TÚ?  (What about you?). This new project is aimed to all sectors of the population, including adults and disabled people.
Our school  also participates in a public health programme called ‘ITES’.  This programme aimed at secondary school students is against smoking and consists of several workshops throughout the school year to make young people aware of the risks of smoking.

MORE ABOUT CANARIAN WRESTLING...

The person who runs the game in the Canarian wrestling matches is the "mandador".
In Punta Brava Club the "mandador" is the same person as the coach, who was named the best coach in 2010; his name is Ignasio Ramos, known as Nacho.
The games can be done in several ways. On the one hand, "la corrida", which consists of playing one against  one, and each team includes sixteen players. On the other hand is the "sistema reducido" (reduced system) in which there are twelve players in each team.
In addition, there are different categories: there are the schools (where there are further subcategories like ‘Benjamin’, up to 10 year old, ‘Alevín’ from eleven to twelve years old and ‘Infantil’ between thirteen and fourteen). Then there are ‘Cadetes’, aged between fifteen and sixteen years old, ‘Youth’, from seventeen to nineteen and finally Senior category, which is absolute.
In competitions, there are several levels. There are the "puntal" or “prop” ("puntal” A,” puntal” B and " puntal " C), “destacado” or “prominent” (destacado A, destacado B and destacado C) and finally the rest of the team members who do not have enough points to be ‘puntales’ or ‘destacados’
Finally, there is a female category, but it isn’t very usual.

PUNTA BRAVA WRESTLING CLUB

We visited Canarian wrestling Punta Brava Club, and there we met César Cabrera, a wrestler and a coach.
Interviewer: Hello César!
César: Hi!
I: When did you start practicing this sport?
C: Well… I have liked it since I was a child. I used to play football, but one day, there was a Canarian wrestling championship in my town, and I decided to join. I loved the experience, and it was then when I started to practice Canarian wrestling.
I: How much time do you spend on practicing this sport?
C: At the beginning, I just trained with the club, but as I am in a higher category now, I need to go to the gym to have a better preparation.
I: Have you won any championships?
C: My problem is that I am short and thin for this sport.  Although what we need is “maña” and balance, instead of being strong and weighting too much. So I use to win the championships where I wrestle against people of my weight. Right now, I am the champion of my category.
I: What is the thing you like most of this sport?
C: The best thing of Canarian wrestling is the nobleness in the competition.
I: Thank you so much.
C: Thanks to you.

The techniques used by wrestlers of FightClub Punta Brava is "La Contra", which is a struggle to try to throw the opponent, "el toque por dentro" and "toque por fuera" are  other techniques which consist on unbalancing the opponent.
The main rule is that you cannot touch the ground with any part of the body except with the soles of your  feet and and if you break this rule, you lose. Everything is movement of hips and knees.
In Fight Club Punta Brava Canaria, the best player is Añaterve Abreu, who is a ‘puntal’ B, but has won against the two “puntales” that are now in the Canary Islands. ‘Puntal’ is  ‘prop’, which means support in a physical or emotional way.
Francisco Javier Pérez Machin, known as "Pollito de la Frontera" has been one of the most famous “puntales” in the Canary Islands.
He started Canarian wrestling when he was only six years old, and over the years his name was first heard on the Canary Islands, as it would become one of the best fighters in history.
Unfortunately, El Pollito de la Frontera retired three seasons ago due to an injury. However, El Pollito has not been disconnected from the Canarian wrestling, and he keeps on giving advice to his students, passing on his teachings and instilling a passion for the fight.

HISTORY OF CANARIAN WRESTLING

We can find the origin of Canarian wrestling in the history of the Aborigines, although it was practiced in a different way, leaving only some remnants of the way to fight the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands had in the form of struggle that is practiced nowadays.

All historians of the period of the conquest of these islands refer to the practice of a form of struggle of the indigenous population of the archipelago. But all these reviews make reference to a description of the type of struggle that was done to find out the origin or source of it.

From this we can deduce that the history of Canarian wrestling has been affected by this lack of data, and only thanks to the historians and chroniclers of the conquest, it was made clear that the Islanders practiced with skill and courage. There is no doubt that at that timethey practiced a fight and that thanks to it the origin of the fight is now known as Canarian wrestling.

In terms of existing theories about its origin, the most widespread today is defending that, as Aboriginal people in pre-conquest times had almost no contact between the different islands, and this type of control was extended by all, the struggle must have come first, and then came the arrival of different people to each of the islands.
Thus, the thesis defended is that  Canarian wrestling has a Berber origin, North African, and when these individuals migrated to the islands brought their form of struggle as a cultural element.
One argument in favor of this thesis is the existence of types of similar struggles in the north of Africa and which are able to "intermarry" with the way it was practiced.

The evolution of the Canarian wrestling throughout its history has been divided by the specialists into three distinct eras: historical era, when folk, little institutional.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PUMPKINS

Nutrients in Pumpkin
Pumpkin is low in fat and calories and rich in disease-fighting nutrients such as:
  • Alpha-carotene
  • Beta-carotene
  • Fiber
  • Vitamins C and E
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Pantothenic acid

Health Benefits of Pumpkin
The alpha-carotene and beta-carotene are potent antioxidants found in pumpkin. Vitamin A promotes healthy vision and ensures proper immune function. The beta-carotene in pumpkin may also reverse skin damage caused by the sun and act as an anti-inflammatory. Alpha-carotene is thought to slow the aging process and also reduce the risk of developing cataracts and prevent tumor growth. Carotenoids lessen the risk of heart attack.
Pumpkin is an excellent source of fiber that helps reduce bad cholesterol levels, protect the body against heart disease, control blood sugar levels, promote healthy digestion, and plays a role in weight loss.
Vitamin C reduces the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, and regulates cholesterol levels. Pumpkin is also a good source of vitamin E which promotes healthy skin by protecting the body from sun damage and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and certain cancers.
The potassium found in pumpkin promotes strong bones and helps to control blood pressure. Pumpkin is also rich in magnesium, which aids the body in hundreds of functions, including promoting a healthy immune system, contributing to bone strength, and normalizing heart function

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds also contain essential vitamins and minerals, they are a good source of vitamin E, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and are an excellent plant-based source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids

PUMPKINS

The pumpkin plant is a rambling vine. They have large, dark green leaves, orange trumpet-shaped flowers, and prickly hairs on the stems and leaves. Like cucumbers, corn, and muskmelons, the pumpkin has separate male and female flowers on the same plant.

Pumpkins are native to the Western Hemisphere. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." The French changed it to "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." American colonists changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin."
T he pumpkin is a member of the squash family, and, though it is treated like a vegetable, it is technically a fruit. The reason a pumpkin is a fruit is because it grows on a vine and contains seeds.
They are typically only available during fall and early winter; however, canned pumpkin is just as nutritious as fresh. Fresh pumpkin or canned pumpkin puree can be used to make soups, muffins, breads, puddings, and smoothies. Pumpkin seeds can be eaten as a snack, used to top salads or added to vegetables. Pumpkin-seed oil can be used in cooking or as a salad dressing.

More than just a decorative Halloween candleholder or a pie filling to be eaten only once a year, pumpkin is one of the most nutritional foods available year round. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, both the flesh and seeds of the pumpkin provide many health-boosting nutrients..
